While I was taking a break after being laid off, I tried to help the mono folks test their WinForms implementation. This involved hanging out on the #mono-winforms IRC channel on irc.gimp.net, building latest mono from SVN (which we always had to do with BugScan), writing little test plans, and trying to make things reproducible. One day, I was talking about looking for XP coaching gigs and Jackson Harper (http://primates.ximian.com/~jackson/blog/) mentioned imeem (http://www.imeem.com) since they are using mono and doing XP.
I sent imeem an email and got a reply about 30 minutes later from one of the founders asking me to come in the next day to interview. I did, and learned that they were using mono to share code between their Windows and MacOS clients, and that the founders built the company to do XP/agile from the ground up. They wanted to bring me on to help them adhere more closely to the XP guidelines and do some programming here and there. I went in for another set of interviews the next week and got my offer letter a week after that.
On my first day, they kept mentioning some marketing tie-in (http://sundance.imeem.com) with sundance film festival (http://festival.sundance.org). I had volunteered at sundance in 2003 and 2004, so I found this nexus of mono, XP, and sundance to be a good sign that this is the right place at the right time. The team here is pretty cool, and I'm using their client every day.
