xbox game review: Obscure

We beat ObsCure a few months ago, here's my take on this neat adventure-horror game.

The graphics are very well done, aided by the fixed cinematic angles and the low light environment used in the game. Things don't look as good once some of the simpler models get into daylight, but I've still seen worse. There were some scary bits, the monsters were very well designed. The production design in general was really excellent.

It has a local (not online) 2-player coop mode, which appears to have been kind of an afterthought, but it's better than nothing. When one of the players goes off-screen, the camera doesn't zoom out a little bit so both players remain on screen. Instead, an arrow appears pointing to where the non-primary player is off-screen. Generally this meant the secondary player is getting the crap beat out of them by monsters and can't see where to whack/shoot to kill them. This was very frustrating, but we learned to just stick together and avoid the issue.

The story wasn't bad, nor was it great. It had good continuity and all the minimal things you would expect, which is more than I can say for most of the other games we play that are supposed to be mostly story-driven. The voice acting is not great, and some of the younger character's lines are downright cheesy. It doesn't detract too much from the clues and plot, though.

Each character has a special power, so it can be very useful to switch between them at various points in the game. This was a really cool aspect that kept things interesting. Fighting was a bit klunky, but we didn't mind it too much.

Overall, I'd recommend ObsCure to anyone who likes the adventure or horror genres, especially if you have someone else to play the game with. Good, local 2-player coop games that don't do lame-ass split screen are a rarity for some reason. This is one of those gems. I got it at Fry's for $15.

Also, it's graphics are upgadeable if you're into that sort of thing.

Rating: 4/5
