IGN has a review and screenshot comparison of the new PS3 emulation update. Their words are kinder than mine. While it's nice to see some action in this area from Sony, I sincerely hope this is just the first step toward real upscaling.
You see, they are just stretching the original image and applying a simple graphics filter over it. It might just be a bilinaer filter, judging by the blurring on text overlays. For the PS2 games, which require a lot more processing power to emulate in software, a simple filter makes sense. For the PS1 games, I'm confounded as to why they didn't use a more powerful filter like HQ3x . Almost every other emulator on the planet uses HQ2x, including some of the free PS1 emulators that run on the XBox!
This pales in comparison to the XBox360, which actually upscales the graphics resolution so that the 3D graphics are rendered in true HD resolution. Because the free memory even at that upscaled resolution is abundant, they then do FSAA on top of that. In fact, I would say it's not even a fair comparison.
PCSXbox and PCSX2 do a better job of improving the graphics of PS1 and PS2 games. If Sony thought this would help a discerning player like myself buy a PS3 instead of a 360, they were wrong. It just shows that they really don't get it. I do understand, of course, that this was the brain-dead easiest thing for them to do since some games do weird things with the graphics buffers, etc. I hope that they, too, understand that this should be just the starting point and not the end.
I'd love to see a screenshot comparison between the same game for PS2 and XBox that are both supported by backward compatibility on the PS3 and the 360. If anyone sees one of those, send me a link and I'll update this blog post.
